The fundamentals of oral and written communication skills in Spanish.
Prerequisites: Placement into MLS 141.

MLS 142: Elementary Spanish II 

The fundamentals of grammar for oral and written communication continued.
Prerequisites: MLS 141 or placement into MLS 142.

MLS 241: Intermediate Spanish I 

Expansion of oral and written communication skills in Spanish with an emphasis on culture.
Prerequisites: MLS 142 or placement into MLS 241.

MLS 242: Intermediate Spanish II 

Expansion of oral and written communication skills in Spanish with an emphasis on culture continued.
Prerequisites: MLS 241 or placement into MLS 242.

MLS 340: Introduction to Spanish Literature 

Strategies for reading and analyzing Spanish and Latin American literature; primarily for non-native speakers of Spanish.
Prerequisite: MLS 242.

MLS 341: Spanish Composition 

Grammar and principles of writing in Spanish.
Prerequisite: MLS 242.

MLS 342: Spanish Conversation 

Designed to increase fluency in speaking Spanish.
Prerequisite: MLS 242.

MLS 343: Civilization of Latin America 

Study of the various social and cultural elements of contemporary Latin America as seen from sociological, historical, political and literary points of view.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 344: Civilization of Spain 

The history and culture of Spain from earliest times to the present.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 346: Survey of Spanish Literature 

Masterpieces of Spanish literature from the eighteenth century to the present.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 441: Advanced Spanish Grammar/Composition 

Subtleties of style, syntax and idioms in Spanish.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 442: Introduction to Spanish Linguistics 

Introduction to Spanish historical and comparative linguistics. Study of Spanish phonology, morphology and syntax.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 446: Golden Age Spanish Literature 

Poetry and prose of the Spanish golden age.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 447: Spanish-American Literature to 1880 

The principal literary works of Spanish America from earliest times to 1880.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 448: Spanish-American Literature since 1880 

The principal literary works of Spanish America from 1880 to the present.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 449: Twentieth Century Spanish-American Fiction 

Detailed study of 20th century Spanish-American fiction on the basis of selected representative works.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 450: Technical Spanish 

Spanish for health professionals, law-enforcement and business; internship in a local agency.
Prerequisites: MLS 341 or MLS 342 Prerequisite.

MLS 479: Spanish Seminar 

Required of all students majoring in Spanish or Spanish Education. Preparation for Oral Proficiency Interview. Not applicable toward a minor.

MLS 490: Special Topics in Hispanic Literature 

In-depth textual analysis of a specific genre, time-period, theme or author within Peninsular or Latin American Literature. Rotating-content course. Students may enroll in this course more than once with content change.
Prerequisites: MLS 346, MLS 447 or MLS 448 Prerequisite.

MLS 496: Studies Abroad: Spanish Culture 

On-location immersion civilization course in Spain with emphasis on contemporary culture. Excursions to places of historical interest.

MLS 497: Studies Abroad: Spanish Communication 

On-location immersion course in Span with emphasis on oral and written communication.

MLS 499: Studies Abroad: Spanish Missions 

On-location study of diverse cultural practices, products and perspectives in a Spanish-speaking country. Features practice of communication skills and guided experience in evangelization. Emphasis on Christian missions.
