As you enter week 9 (chapter 9.2) of ModPo, please note that now we are writing and submitting our fourth and final assignment. We hope you enjoy this one!
There are two options, A and B. If you choose A, you are asked to work with a little web-based program called the "Mesostomatic." This enables you to try your hand at composing a mesostic in the manner of Cage. Please note that the program can be a bit buggy. Sometimes when you paste in a URL (web address) for the text of a poem, it will produce a kind of error page. It works best when you paste in a URL for a page which is mostly the text of the poem. If you don't at first get good results, try to increase the number of mesostics you want to produce, and that will take the program further down into the sourcetext.
If you can't get the Mesostomatic to work, (1) try doing your mesostic by hand and/or (2) give up on option A and try option B, writing on the basis of one of Bernadette Mayer's experiments.
Assignment #4 should be submitted in the usual way before next Sunday at 11:59 PM eastern time.
Please note, too, that as usual there is a new quiz for this week.
The quality of essays submitted for assignment #3 was very high. Several leading critics not otherwise involved with ModPo read a sampling of them and were quite impressed. Congratulations, ModPo people! I've posted a summary of the response of Marjorie Perloff (an excerpt of whose criticism we are reading this week) to the discussion forum; search the forums by her name and will you find it.
Washington DC-area ModPo'ers will have seen us in the Washington Post yesterday, as did, of course, those who follow the Post on the web. Poetry makes news! Who knew? Well, some did. Ezra Pound once said that poetry "is news that STAYS news." And Williams, late in his career, said: “It is difficult to get the news from poems, yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there.”

Welcome to Spring Semester 2013
La Secretaría de Cultura convenio con la Asociación para la Promoción de las Artes Proartes, realiza la convocatoria para la creación de proyectos audiovisuales ‘Retratado la Ciudad’. Esta iniciativa propone un espacio de eco para aquellos que quieren mostrar lo que ven en su diario vivir en la ciudad que sienten como suya; “es un retratar, que intentará dar identidad a cada una de las ciudades que habita cada ciudadano desde sus costumbres, sus manifestaciones y expresiones culturales, su crianza y hasta su forma de caminar o desplazarse por ella”, dice la secretaria de Cultura y Turismo de la ciudad, María Helena Quiñónez.
Podrán participar realizadores caleños, personas naturales, organizaciones culturales y colectivos audiovisuales.
Las inscripciones para la convocatoria estarán abiertas del 1 al 10 de noviembre. Los interesados en participar podrán hacerlo, a través de la página oficial de la Alcaldía, link-cultura (www.cali.gov.co) (previo formato de inscripción) o en la Videoteca Municipal de Santiago de Cali. Los postulados deberán adjuntar el proyecto propuesto, que deberá tener un tiempo de realización desde el año 2011 a la fecha.
Los participantes tendrán plazo de un mes para entregar su producto final. El 10 de diciembre es la fecha límite para la entrega de los trabajos, que deben ser entregados en DVD, con una duración máxima de 20 minutos.
El día 15 de diciembre se realizará una actividad audiovisual con todos los productos finales que participaron en la convocatoria. Se premiarán al primero y al segundo lugar de cada una de las categorías.
Categorías
Ficción: Esta categoría corresponde a la realización de un material audiovisual, en el que los actores son necesarios para el desarrollo del guion.
Documental: Es la expresión de un aspecto de la realidad, mostrada en forma audiovisual.

Allí se hará la firma del convenio entre la Alcaldía y la firma canadiense Center for Clean Air Policy (CCAP), para dar ‘luz verde’ al estudio que determinará la construcción de una planta de residuos sólidos en la ciudad.
El proyecto, liderado por el Ministerio de Ambiente, seleccionó a Cali para analizar la viabilidad de construir una planta que permita transformar los desechos sólidos en energía, en lugar de enterrarlos, como sucede actualmente.
A su vez, será presentada, de manera oficial, la Bienal de Muralismo que por primera vez reunirá a artistas de todo el país para embellecer las calles de Cali.
