Colombia has confirmed its position as a high-performance country in sport, thanks to its dedicated efforts to train world-class athletes.
These have allowed Colombia to achieve outstanding levels of participation in both regional and international sports events, where Colombians have been appearing now for more than a century.The enthusiasm which the nation’s athletes display when they compete in various championships, always trying their best on the sporting stage, has allowed them to place the country and its tricolor flag high in people’s estimation. Today their eyes are on The World Games 2013 in Cali.
At the 8th World Games in Kaohsiung 2009, Colombia ranked 13th among over 100 countries, winning 12 medals. Since then, the country has achieved even better results, as was illustrated clearly in the 2011 Pan American Games, where Colombia won sixth place among 42 countries with 84 medals.
Colombia has its most outstanding results in speed skating, artistic gymnastics, squash, martial arts, fin-swimming and bowling.
The World Games will arrive in Latin America for the first time in 2013 (TWG2013) under the motto “Fair Play to the Planet”. The competition program will stage more than 170 medal events in 31 sports, 26 official and 5 invitational, which include: Salsa as dance sport; rhythmic, acrobatic, aerobic and trampoline Gymnastics, Speed Roller-Skating, Fin-swimming, In-line Hockey, Wushu, Sumo and Karate. This world meet will bring together nearly 5,000 athletes from 120 countries around the world. Colombia looks forward to receiving more than 3,000 foreign tourists and 1 million spectators in all at the elite World Games championships.
This is why, with Cali working steadily to further improve its sports infrastructure, Colombia is moving confidently towards The World Games 2013.
